Institute for Social Research
Swinburne University of Technology & the Centre for Design RMIT, Melbourne
SYMPOSIUM FOCUS
The relationship between housing and theory
“The house is a static object: but the people who live in it are not … housing is the background – the stage-that allows us to act. It is the set, the locale, where we play out
our lives with other actors and their sets overlapping and interlinking with ours” (King, ENHR2006)
Key Note speaker: Professor Elizabeth Shove (Lancaster University) on sociologically grounded approaches to consumption studies that explores meaning, identity and everyday life and cultural practices within the home.
HOUSING RESEARCHERS CONFERENCE (Asia, Pacific, Australasia and beyond)
Sydney, 5-7 August 2009.
This conference combines for the first time the Asia Pacific Network of Housing Research [APNHR] Conference and the Australasian Housing Researchers Conference [AHRC]. With housing at the centre of the world’s financial and economic crisis, the conference is an opportunity for practicing housing researchers from around the region to compare and develop perspectives, and theoretical and empirical findings based on research into different dimensions of housing including economics, society and environment.
The conference themes will explore economic, social, cultural and environmental challenges for researchers in the region, and will be jointly hosted by the City Futures Research Centre of the University of New South Wales and Swinburne University's Cities Housing and Environment Program.
The conference will be held in the centre of Sydney, near Darling Harbour and China Town.
The program will include keynote presentations by international experts, workshop and plenary sessions as well as field trips around Sydney.
We are now calling for a broad range of papers for the conference on one of five key themes:
- Housing Policy Innovations
- Housing in a Sustainable World
- Housing and Urban Form
- Housing Markets and Finance
- Housing, Culture and Society
Key dates for papers:
- 3rd April 2009 for submitting abstracts (max 300 words)
